MOTHER TERESA OF TEMBISA RECEIVES A BABY OF HER OWN
In the heart of Tembisa, above the hustle and bustle of daily life, the laughter and song of children can be clearly heard. The place from where these joyful sounds come from is Webster Creche and Pre-School, and at its heart is Lydia Mokuma. Even though this principal and teacher love children, it wasn’t easy to have her own. David and Lydia Mokumo have three beautiful children – Lorraine (24), Lebo (12) and Tshepo (8 months).

Tshepo was born when Lydia was 43 years old, an age more often associated with a mammogram than with a pregnancy. The age difference between Lydia’s children gives you an indication of the number of years she and her husband struggled to conceive.
After their first two children the Mokuma couple endured more years of failing to fall pregnant. It was years coated with miscarriages, fertility drugs, numerous visits to doctors and the fear of possible infertility. By then Lydia had passed her thirties and gynaecologists where concerned about her age. She was told that her fallopian tubes could be blocked and that it would be wise to test her husband’s sperm. None of the above turned out to be faulty. What was wrong? Why didn’t they fall pregnant again?
An infertility advertisement in the local newspaper led Lydia to Dr PJ Venter. At the age of 43, Lydia was an unlikely candidate for a pregnancy, but within only one month of taking the natural, homeopathic medicine Lydia was astonished to find she was expecting. Eight month old Tshepo testifies of a couple’s struggle to conceive but not giving up. Tshepo means “promise” because they knew in their hearts they would still have more children. His friendly nature is definitely a result of being raised by such a caring mother and loving father. David is a pastor in Tembisa and supports his wife’s cause by trying to help out as best as he can.
“We adore children and want to have many more, so I will be going back to Dr Venter at the end of this year,” a now 44 year old Lydia exclaimed, smiling broadly. "Everyone is amazed and thinks Tshepo is a miracle,” Lydia says about her family and friends who can’t believe their good fortune.
Lydia refers women struggling with infertility to Dr Venter as she believes that although it won’t work for everyone, natural medicine definitely helped in fulfilling God’s promise to them.
Because Lydia Mokuma adores children she opened her home and is caring for an ever growing number of babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers during the day. It is a cause that is dependant on the kindness of sponsors alone, as the mothers of many of these children cannot afford any pre-school care. She also attends one-day courses and has completed several workshops to learn more about child development.
